Nothing is nicer than being able to do design work for a brand new entrepreneur. And working with Heidi on her new product called EyeFringe was really nice. It’s a new innovation for hair accessories developed by herself, a hairdresser and beautician working in the UK. The work ended up being a small website, YouTube channel, Facebook page and packaging printed insert.

Often the best inventions are those where the inventor has realised themselves that there is a gap in the market. It’s a need they have themselves. In the very same way many of the iPhone apps are developed because the developer has found something that they need help with.

Heidi realised that there was no solution to her problem available. She wanted to be able to wear a fringe with her long hair but found her hairline was not suitable. Her hair had a slight waive that made it difficult for her to wear a fringe.

She searched for solutions, found none, and made her own one work. It’s a very easy accessory that slips over the head to fit the fringe securely at the hairline adding a new look to a hairstyle without hassle and furthermore always offering a well groomed look, easily.

Heidi took a trip to Thailand to have her product made. As part of the items necessary for the product Yeah Can designed the insert for her packaging providing instructions and health warnings as well as a nice looking backing for the hair piece to rest on.

In support of her online shop, the website was developed, a YouTube channel set up and a Facebook page started. With additional help she has been able to set up an online shop where people can buy their hair accessory. It’s sure to be a really successful new product. After all everybody likes to look good.

Word spreads quickly! Once Yeah Can had offered its web design services for free and had uploaded the Hope Center’s new site other non-profits operating in Hue, Vietnam took notice and clambered to get the same help.

Hue Help which works closely with Hope Center by arranging volunteers to teach English at the Center and help with product development asked for help for their site.

Originally it was going to be just some lessons to the Director Graham Buckley in how to work with a content management tool. But it was soon agreed that the original site was not worth saving and that a new one should be built in its place.

Yeah Can saved the content and got to work using WordPress as the preferred content management tool. New designs were approved and the site was built using a fair number of new features.

One of the nice new features is the sophisticated sign in form for people interested in volunteering. Hue Help is all about volunteering and bringing volunteers to help disabled and disadvantaged kids and adults in central Vietnam. But mostly Hue Help serves children.

Tackling the website for Effortless Abundance was top priority as soon as the logo had been approved. The first step was to determine the look and feel and have this approved. Then the work really started. And web design is not as easy as might appear.

Even using WordPress as a content management tool has its own pitfalls and problems.

One of the main obstacles facing web designers is the plethora of browsers available to the web users. Not only are there many types of browsers available such as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome naming the main players amongst many more lesser used brands but there are also numerous versions still in play.

We, the human being folk, get comfortable with our software and old machines. We don’t want to change. We are also a little scared that with new software we might not know what to do and heaven forbid we might even break the thing.

So we decline to upgrade our software even when it is for free. This creates further problems for the poor web designers. New web sites have to be designed in such a way that even older versions of Internet Explorer for instance will still show the site without broken links or displaced images.

Web design is certainly not as easy as most people thing and it takes great skills to ensure that everything works well. Yeah Can will make sure that Effortless Abundance will have a web site that works!

Yeah Can was tasked with the web design and setting up a sales micro-site for Effortless Abundance. The product, 30 Days to Change your Life received it’s own six page site to replace the more conventional ‘squeeze’ page that internet marketers use.

It was decided to follow the green of the book cover to create the look and feel of the site. And added to this was the gold colour to provide a signal to the viewer that the book would enhance a person’s life. Richly. Just like gold could do as well.

In addition to the site design, Yeah Can also provided the designs for all adverts for affiliate marketers in the various sizes the client requested.

Most people will have heard of social media by now. But have you heard of social discovery? Most often one thinks of Facebook and Twitter as the most representative of social media and a concept that many people have heard of. In fact there are over 900 million people using Facebook right now. That’s a fair number.

Of course social media has sub sections. Social networking is commonly considered when using tools to talk to and support each other. Sites such as LinkedIn have been designed to assist business people to meet and greet and for people to upload professional profiles in the hope of finding jobs or business opportunities.

Amongst all of these umpteen online meeting and sharing places are also the discovery folk. Most commonly one considers online places where people can find people as social discovery sites. Of course cross over situations happen such as on Facebook where one can ‘Find Friends’.

But there are specific social discovery sites that focus on people finding new people, that is people they do not know. Amongst these, and some of the quickest growing communities, are the dating sites.

The reason for this? Regrettably the traditional meeting places for singles looking for a partner are dropping away. High migration patterns of people who think nothing of moving cities for jobs or to attend college mean that finding a soulmate is not as easy as it might have been during the times of their parents.

Traditional meeting and mating spaces such as University campuses, church communities, sporting fields or hobby clubs are no longer regularly attended. Even the work environment is no longer stable enough to foster relationships.

Add to this the divorce/split-up rate and the fact that we live such long and mostly healthy lives and one can see that spaces where people can meet each other for long term relationships can be most attractive.

Enter the online dating sites. A quick scout around shows that not only are dating sites proliferating but the industry supporting this social field is just as active and certainly all out trying to make money off it.

Polished Rock – Responsive Web Design

Different can be very difficult

For most designers the idea of being able to explore something totally different is an exciting concept, especially if it also needs to be responsive web design. Let your imagination run wild to make something unique, a design that is unusual and hasn’t been done too often. Of course one always needs to remember that in web design the design needs to be executable. That is, it has to work according to how the client would like it to work.

And between those two concepts, that is design on the one hand, and execution on the other can be a chasm as large as the Grand Canyon valley. In fact, bigger!

Perhaps there is also a touch of the arrogance to the idea that we can design anything and surely some coder can make it work. Surely it can never be impossible.

And to a certain degree that is most definitely true. Most things can be made to work as requested. And if not now then most definitely in the near future. However, there is a small problem attached to that thinking. Most special functionality that you will see on the internet whether it’s a clever phone app or an amazing website that allows you to search for a property to rent on the other side of the planet like Airbnb’s site has had a ton of money thrown at it to make it work. High end computer programming specialists have worked in teams and for months to launch the site and continue to work on it to continue to keep it awesome.

For Yeah Can, whose target market is small to mid sized businesses with an ongoing mantra that spells affordability for the small business guy or doll teams of programmers are not an option . So taking on a project that requires such high end programming is usually not a good idea. It doesn’t tie in with the target market! And the clients generally don’t understand the complexity of their wishes either. Just make it work, is the thinking in most cases.

Of course this particular project was nowhere near the complexity of an Airbnb. However, in terms of making the site responsive and working on every single gadget the client could think of to test it on (even gadgets team Yeah Can had no way of getting hold of to try the site on) it felt like we were abseiling the one side of the Grand Canyon and crawling up the other side.

It was with great thanks that team Yeah Can had a client who showed huge patience while the team worked through issues, tried different solutions and in general tried to make it happen as quickly as possible. And yes, the site looks harmless enough. But making it responsive was the hurdle. The mountain that at times didn’t feel as if it could ever be climbed.

1) Keep it clean and uncluttered
One of the big mistakes the web site owner makes is to try and fit in too much information, too many images, too much advertising in fact too much of everything. Keep your message clear. This applies to the design and navigation as well. The cleaner a site the easier it is for visitors to find the information they are looking for. It also enables search engines to collect information. Check number 2.

2) SEO enabled
Creating a Search Engine Optimised site is not that difficult. Put some effort into researching your keywords that you feel your visitors or customers might be using to search for your services and build these into your site.

3) No Flash
Let go of those animation introductions and banners. Nobody has time for them anymore. Besides this Flash animations tend to irritate search engine bots who are trying to spider their way through your site checking to see what your site is all about. You don’t want to irritate search engines!

4) Use WordPress or equivalent
Do not be at the mercy of your web designer everytime you need to change something on your site. Those days are over thank goodness. Insist on a WordPress site. This great content management tool will allow you to update almost all of your site yourself. This means you can change information as required, upload images and even write a blog.

5) Have a blog on your site
It’s really important that you have some fresh content on your site. Regularly. Build yourself a customer list or just a following of interested people. Work on your reputation by showing you know what you are talking about. Write about your field to inform, impress and for search engine robots to take note.

6) Social networking and all that jazz
Encourage people to recommend you, vote for you, follow you, join you, appreciate you. And the list goes on. Plug into all this sharing world. Be on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, Flikr or whatever suits your time and inclination and include widgets on your site that allow people to network with you. But don’t forget you have to share back.

The first step was to decide on a name and ensure the domain name was available. Nowadays the name of a business and it’s web presence have to be married right at the beginning. The design of the logo was next. Client decided on blue and yellow as the primary colours and the logo was developed using variations of these two colours.
