Yeah Can’s team was invited to participate at Hope Center’s Creative Workshop on Saturday. And it was wonderful fun to join the disabled and disadvantaged people for a get your hands dirty fabric painting morning.

Iiris Jalkanen has been a Hue Help volunteer working at Hope Center since December 2010. She has been working with the handicraft artisans to develop new products. In particular her skills in sewing are most welcome by all at Hope Center.

As part of her placement and in line with what her University’s requirements are of her stay in Hue, Central Vietnam, she has developed a course for staff and workers at the Center. Every Saturday for six weeks the team at Hope Center will take part in a Creative Thinking workshop.

The Hope Center is Yeah Can’s social responsibility project. This means that events such as these are great opportunities to have fun together and to get to know each other better. In any case it is always a great pleasure being at the Hope Center as the people are so welcoming and friendly.

And the fun that everybody had will ensure that the Yeah Can team will be back the next Saturday. This time it’s going to be making wrapping paper and small boxes for the Center’s products. It will be both a creative and very useful session. The Hope Center needs pretty paper and boxes for its handicraft products especially the jewellery items.

Word spreads quickly! Once Yeah Can had offered its web design services for free and had uploaded the Hope Center’s new site other non-profits operating in Hue, Vietnam took notice and clambered to get the same help.

Hue Help which works closely with Hope Center by arranging volunteers to teach English at the Center and help with product development asked for help for their site.

Originally it was going to be just some lessons to the Director Graham Buckley in how to work with a content management tool. But it was soon agreed that the original site was not worth saving and that a new one should be built in its place.

Yeah Can saved the content and got to work using WordPress as the preferred content management tool. New designs were approved and the site was built using a fair number of new features.

One of the nice new features is the sophisticated sign in form for people interested in volunteering. Hue Help is all about volunteering and bringing volunteers to help disabled and disadvantaged kids and adults in central Vietnam. But mostly Hue Help serves children.

Yeah Can wishes Hue Help all the very best with their new web site. May they grow from strength to strength and continue offering their important and worthwhile service to the children of Hue.

When Yeah Can took on the Hope Center in Hue Vietnam as their social responsibility programme they didn’t imagine that the development of handicraft products would be one of the tasks they would get involved in. But it certainly has.

The strategy session with Mrs Hong the Vice Director in charge of the center plus two deaf artisans  with team Yeah Can was a fun event and much was discussed. It was decided that there would be four definite product ranges.

There would be continuous development for recycled wire products. The first new product would be the decoration of the very Vietnamese coffee filters. This new product would be added to the existing bowls, hand held mirrors, picture frames and jewellery items.

Further jewellery items would be a series of bangles using the hand woven A Luoi fabric. The first prototypes have been made and a lot of enthusiastic attention was given to these lovely new products. Even the local population loves them and it seems this new product will have appeal with Vietnamese shoppers as well.

The third range will be a development of paper products starting with greeting cards. These will have designs printed faintly on the cards and will be hand painted by the artisans to create a more handicrafted look and feel. There have been some slight problems with quality of manufacture and the process might need to be changed slightly to accommodate the skills of the disabled artisans.

The final product range to get started will involve bead work. This will be in the form of beads added to the greeting cards as well as used in jewellery production.

It will be interesting to see how the product development will move forward. One thing is for sure, Yeah Can is having fun at the same time as giving something back to the universe.

Yeah Can has been involved in the shop design of its favourite client Hope Center. Hope Center was Yeah Can’s first client. A pro bona one. Social responsibility before making money. Good approach.

From logo design to web design for Hope Center was always on the cards. But designing the interior fittings for a shop? That was a new one. But then team Yeah Can will not hide from any challenge!

At this stage of the development of the shop space the floor has been redone, the bamboo side walls and ceiling completed and painted with white oil based paint, the spotlights and fans put up and now the shelving units are in place.

The awning also received its branding as the brand police force is slowly implementing the same look everywhere. It’s a slow process with the office still sending out documents without the logo. But constant reminders will work there too.

The last decorative element will be the photographs above the shelving unit. These will show the Hope Center’s artisans working at handicraft production as well as the weaving crew and sewing teams. The photographic montage will be the only colour in an otherwise white decor.

It’s been designed to give the products and the photos of the members of Hope Center the spotlight. They are after all the important folk here.
